MKE Downtown Dog Park

Overview

The MKE Downtown Dog Park boldly reimagines Downtown Milwaukee’s riverfront by transforming an underutilized site beneath I-794 into an active community destination. Built along the Milwaukee RiverWalk District, this vibrant project creates a vital public amenity for the city’s growing residential population. As Milwaukee’s first-of-its-kind downtown dog park, it advances urban redevelopment while forging stronger connections to surrounding neighborhoods and the future Foxtown Landing, scheduled to open in 2027.

The dog park design includes two distinct fenced areas: a 3,500-square-foot enclosure for small dogs and an 18,100-square-foot enclosure for larger dogs. Synthetic pet turf provides a durable, low-maintenance surface that helps keep the park clean and mud-free year-round. Paved pathways and a variety of seating options create a comfortable environment for both pets and their owners. A centrally located circular bench and planter anchor the space, while a decorative metal dog sculpture adds a playful and recognizable feature. Other amenities include water stations, including a dog-friendly fountain and waste-disposal receptacles.

The MKE Downtown Dog Park has been recognized for its impact and contribution to the City of Milwaukee, including being named a Milwaukee Business Journal Real Estate Awards finalist and considered for the Daily Reporter’s Top Projects of 2025. As part of the project, lighting introduced beneath the bridge enhances visibility and contributes to a safer environment during evening hours. The project highlights the value of well-executed urban architecture in creating meaningful, community-focused environments.

At Stephen Perry Smith Architects, we create spaces that enhance daily life through thoughtful public space design and a strong understanding of context. The MKE Downtown Dog Park embodies this approach, delivering a carefully planned public amenity that supports urban livability, encourages connection, and contributes to the ongoing evolution of downtown Milwaukee.
